Everyone in aviation has an opinion about MOSAIC. Almost nobody agrees. Some say it’s the biggest enrollment opportunity flight schools have seen in 20 years. Others say the hype is way ahead of reality. On July 30, we’re putting both sides on the same stage and letting them argue it out, live, so you can decide what it means for your school.
One Rule, Very Different Predictions
MOSAIC rewrote the rules for sport pilots and light aircraft. The first phase landed in October 2025, when the FAA replaced the old 1,320-pound weight cap with a 59-knot clean stall speed test. That change made a huge share of the existing training fleet sport-pilot-eligible, including the Cessna 172.
The second phase took effect July 24, 2026, right in the middle of EAA AirVenture. It replaced the old light-sport aircraft rulebook with a new certification framework for manufacturers.
Here’s where the agreement ends. Ask five people in the industry what happens next, and you’ll get five different answers. That’s exactly why we built this webinar as a panel instead of a lecture.

What the Panel Will Debate
Is the enrollment opportunity real or overhyped?
Industry estimates put roughly 60 to 75 percent of the existing GA fleet inside the new sport pilot privilege. Optimists see a wave of lapsed pilots and cost-sensitive first-timers. Skeptics ask how many of them will actually walk through your door.
Should schools build a sport pilot program now or wait?
Sport pilot training runs an estimated $5,000 to $8,500, versus $12,000 to $18,750 for a private pilot certificate. That gap could open a new market. It could also cannibalize private pilot starts if schools position it wrong.
What about the bottlenecks nobody wants to talk about?
A documented examiner shortage could slow checkrides in some regions. Insurance carriers won’t update coverage automatically. Night flying still requires a medical or BasicMed. Our panelists will disagree on how much these problems matter, and that disagreement is worth hearing.
When do new MOSAIC aircraft actually arrive?
Phase 2 is in effect, but new MOSAIC airplanes are not on dealer lots yet. Early movers like Tecnam are projecting first deliveries in early 2027. The panel will dig into what they heard at AirVenture and what a realistic fleet timeline looks like.
