Flight School Marketing System

How the Flight School Marketing System Works

Flight school marketing is eight jobs. Each one hands off to the next, and a break anywhere wastes the jobs feeding it. This page walks the chain, shows which service does each job, and lets you grade your own school.

Three good jobs still get you nothing

Last month an owner told us his marketing was not working. He had a website, he posted on Facebook, and he tried Google Ads once. Two 172s and a Warrior on the ramp. He was doing three real jobs. He did not know there were eight.

The eight jobs are not additive. They are sequential. Each one hands off to the next, and a break anywhere drops everything feeding it.

Rank number one with a website that does not convert, and you bought traffic that bounces. Build a beautiful site nobody can find, and you built a store in a field. Run ads into a follow-up process that does not exist, and you paid for leads so they could go cold.

A chain does not care how strong your three good links are. The diagram below is the chain.

Eight jobs, one chain

Four jobs bring a student to you. Two turn that visit into an inquiry. One turns the inquiry into a student. One sits under all of them. Select any job to see what it is, what it takes, what it looks like when it is missing, and a ten second test you can run on your own school.

Job 1 of 8

Positioning

Decide what you are selling, and who you are selling it to.

What the job is

Career track and weekend flyer are two different buyers. Most homepages talk to neither.

What doing it well takes

Pick the student you want more of. Write the one sentence that says why they should train with you and not the school across the field. Every other job repeats that sentence.

What it looks like when it is missing

Your site could belong to any school in your state. Your ads sell flying in general. Nobody can tell what makes you different, so they pick on price.

The ten second test

Open your homepage. Cover your logo with your thumb. Could that page belong to any other school in your state?

Job 2 of 8

Website

Turn a stranger into an inquiry.

What the job is

What you train, what it costs, what happens next. Above the fold, on a phone, on cell data.

What doing it well takes

A fast site that loads on a phone in a parking lot. A price or a price range on the page. One clear next step, a discovery flight, with a form or a number that gets tracked.

What it looks like when it is missing

Rank number one with a website that does not convert, and you bought traffic that bounces.

The ten second test

Load your homepage on your phone with wifi off. Count the seconds. Then find the price and the next step without scrolling.

Job 3 of 8

Search

Show up when someone types flight school near me.

What the job is

Keyword research into what student pilots type, not what you would type. A page for every certificate and every town you draw from.

What doing it well takes

Technical fixes so Google can read the site. A page per certificate and per town. Content built around the questions students ask before they call. Then months of patience, because this is the slowest job on the list.

What it looks like when it is missing

Build a beautiful site nobody can find, and you built a store in a field.

The ten second test

Search flight school plus your town in a private window. Are you on the first page? Now try discovery flight plus your town.

Job 4 of 8

Local presence

Exist correctly in fifty places you have never logged into.

What the job is

Google Business Profile, aviation directories, citations that match, and a system that asks for reviews instead of hoping.

What doing it well takes

One name, one address, one phone number, spelled the same everywhere. A Google profile with fresh photos and posts. A review ask after every milestone, and a reply to every review inside a week.

What it looks like when it is missing

Google sees three versions of your school and trusts none of them. The map pack goes to the school that keeps getting reviews, and yours stopped.

The ten second test

Search your school's name. Do the hours, phone number, and address match on Google, Yelp, and your own site?

Job 5 of 8

AI answers

Get cited when someone asks an AI.

What the job is

Schema, page structure, and citation tracking. There is no page two to be on.

What doing it well takes

Pages that answer one question each, in plain language. Structured data that names your school, your programs, and your field. Mentions on the directories and sites the AI models read.

What it looks like when it is missing

A student asks ChatGPT for the best flight school in your city and gets three names. None of them is yours, and the student never learns you exist.

The ten second test

Ask ChatGPT for the best flight school in your city. Read what comes back. Are you in the answer?

Job 6 of 8

Paid attention

Buy attention on purpose.

What the job is

Account structure, negative keywords, call tracking, and a landing page built for the ad instead of your homepage.

What doing it well takes

A budget that clears the testing floor. Tracked calls and forms so every dollar has a lead attached. A landing page that matches the ad. Then leaving it alone long enough to learn.

What it looks like when it is missing

Nothing fills the schedule while search catches up. The school down the field holds the top ad slot for your town, and your name sits under theirs.

The ten second test

Search discovery flight plus your town. Whose ad is at the top? If it is not yours, someone else is buying your students.

Job 7 of 8

Trust content

Be worth choosing once they are already looking.

What the job is

Video, student stories, real faces. Not stock photos of a Cirrus you do not own.

What doing it well takes

A monthly shoot on your ramp. Your instructors on camera answering the safety question. Student stories that show what training looks like at your school, and a posting calendar that points every post at a discovery flight page.

What it looks like when it is missing

A student compares you against two other schools with the same stock photos. Nothing tells them who they will fly with, so they pick the one with the better video.

The ten second test

Open your Instagram and your homepage. Can a stranger name one instructor and see one real student inside a minute?

Job 8 of 8

Follow-up

Answer in minutes, and stay in touch for months.

What the job is

Missed call text back, nurture that runs while you are flying, and a pipeline that does not live in someone's memory.

What doing it well takes

A CRM that every inquiry lands in. A text back within minutes when you miss a call. Email and text follow-up that runs while you are in the air. A pipeline from lead to discovery flight to enrollment that someone reviews every week.

What it looks like when it is missing

A student who fills out your form on a Friday night should not wait until Monday to hear back. Most do, and by Monday they have booked with someone who answered.

The ten second test

Fill out your own website form at 8 pm. Time how long until a human or a text reaches you.

Grade your school

Tick the jobs your school runs today. Not the ones you tried once. The ones that run every month.

What it looks like when all eight run

Hawkins Flight Academy sits outside St. Louis. Co-founder Matt Wilkins built the first website himself. When they started there were no trackable leads, no campaigns, and nothing indexed worth finding.

In six months, all eight jobs running together produced 348 trackable leads. That is 121 form fills and 227 phone calls. Blended cost per lead landed at $47.90, and $33.78 from ads alone. Total investment was $16,668, nine thousand in fees and $7,668 in ad spend.

Here is the honest part. Month one produced almost nothing. The line does not move until month three, because job three is the slowest job on the list. Their site performance score went from 64 to 70, which is a small move, and we are still working on it.

Matt kept flying, kept teaching, kept the doors open. We showed him the list and flew right seat. Read the full Hawkins numbers.

Questions owners ask about the chain

Do the eight jobs have to happen in order?

No. The numbering is the order most schools should fix them in, not a schedule. Jobs one and two come first because every other job hands off to your website. After that, run the jobs your market needs most. What matters is that each job has somewhere to hand off to.

Which job should I start with if I can only afford one?

Job one costs nothing but an afternoon. Decide who you are selling to and write the sentence that says why you. Then job two, because a website that converts is what every other job feeds. Paying for attention before that is paying for bounces.

How long until the chain produces students?

Paid attention can produce inquiries in the first week. Search takes three to six months to move, which is why Hawkins saw almost nothing in month one and 71 leads in month six. Follow-up pays off fastest of all, because it works on the inquiries you already get.

Can I run some of the jobs myself?

Yes, and many owners do. Reviews, Google Business Profile posts, and answering the phone fast are jobs you can own in-house. Use the eight jobs as a checklist and decide, job by job, who owns each one. The unowned jobs are the problem, not the ones you kept.

I already have an agency. Is this still useful?

Ask them which of the eight jobs they own and which are unowned. That one conversation is worth more than most reports. If jobs are unowned, the marketing audit shows you where the chain breaks.
